At Otley Primary School we endeavour to teach a broad and balanced science curriculum in all classes. Being a mixed year group setting, we review and plan science topics each year to enable our children to have complete access to the Science National Curriculum. Both Key Stages are taught a mixture of biology, chemistry and physics concepts throughout the year.
Our children are encouraged to develop their creativity and curiosity. Our science teaching openly welcomes the children’s own ideas and scientific questions and whole lessons can be planned off the back of this.
A lot of time and effort has been spent on improving our school site. Our School grounds, pond area and different nature zones allow the children to gain first-hand experience of the outdoor world. Their learning of topics such as plants, seasonal changes and habitats are supported by outdoor sessions, which allow the children to observe their environment by taking a closer look at nature.
The school has an active Eco Team which helps raise awareness of different environmental issues. They have recently taken part in the ‘Switch of Fortnight’ campaign run by EDF and have conducted surveys of the school grounds to see who is living there.
